Most everyone, including Ryan Adams, hated Rock N Roll. But I didn’t. As the years have gone by, however, many of the songs have fallen out of my favor because I think he’s explored similar musical territory in later songs, more successfully. That said, in those later songs, he has excised much of the desperate, extreme pithiness which made this album so loveable: “Note to Self: Don’t Die”? “Do Miss America”? Rock N Roll was a musical finger. That this FU album was a quid-pro-quo album with Lost Highway makes it even more delightfully subversive, despite its off-the-wall and inconsistent musical qualities.
The people dancing in the corner, they seem happy
But I am sad
I am still dancing in the coma of the drinks I just had
Does anybody want to take me home?
Does anybody want to take me home?
Take me to your house, and I’ll leave you alone
Of course I will
Of course I won’t
It seems so tragic… but it disappears like magic
Of course, this album, like most of his albums, has a song that could be on any of his albums. It’s usually sad. It’s usually desperate. It’s usually my favorite of the lot.
